Marcus Rashford and Alex Telles are reportedly being offered by Manchester United in exchange for Barcelona player Frenkie de Jong. Erik ten Hag has been named the new manager of the Red Devils, and his appointment will coincide with a major makeover of the squad at Old Trafford.
The Dutch coach is expected to make some changes this summer, with one of his former Ajax players being targeted. De Jong, 24, spent two years at Amsterdam under Ten Hag's tutelage, growing into one of Europe's most promising young midfielders during that period. Barcelona would consider offers for the Dutch midfielder worth up to £72 million, according to Fichajes.net. United are assessing their options, and Rashford and Telles may be used as makeweights in a deal to bring De Jong to the Premier League and save money on a price.
De Jong was a member of the Ten Hag-coached Ajax team that advanced to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals. Under the management, the 24-year-old also won the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup in the same season.
Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona is the ideal midfielder to spark Erik ten Hag's Manchester United revolution.
Manchester United is on the verge of losing two of their most experienced central midfielders. Manchester United's contracts with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are coming to an end.
It clears the way for Erik ten Hag to join the club and begin rebuilding the roster, with a midfielder a must-have. And who better to play the part than Frenkie de Jong?
Ten Hag used the Dutch midfielder 78 times for Ajax, scoring four goals and providing 13 assists. The pair's previous friendship speaks well for what could be a wise move for the Red Devils if a deal for the Dutchman can be reached. Barcelona may have reservations about bringing Rashford and Telles to the club. Neither has had seasons at Barca that are worthy of becoming starters, with the English forward enduring possibly his worst season to date.
The Brazilian left-back is Luke Shaw's backup and hasn't had much success this season.
However, due to budgetary constraints at the Nou Camp, Barca will have to be more hands-on with their transfer activities. Perhaps they'll find it difficult to pass up the opportunity to get two players for the price of one.
One thing is certain: Manchester United requires a complete revamp in order to reclaim their former grandeur.
